Every river deserves
the freedom to flow.

We conserve rivers, promote sustainability, and empower forest-dependent communities through research, education and advocacy.

Who We Are

A trust for rivers, people
and the basin they share

River Research Centre (RRC) is a non-profit Public Charitable and Scientific Trust created to open a space for studies on rivers — for river basin people, river-dependent departments, local self-governments, government and all concerned entities — towards participatory and decentralised river conservation, restoration and management.

RRC was registered as a Trust in August 2006. But our activities had started as early as 2002, on an informal basis, on the banks of Chalakudy River.

We believe a river cannot be saved by looking at the river alone. It has to be understood with its catchment, its forests, its people, its livelihoods and its culture. That is why we work at the river basin level.

Our efforts involve —

  • Generate and collate database for river basins
  • Conduct research and provide technical inputs related to river basin management
  • Evolve river basin level forums
  • Enable communities in campaigns to protect their river
  • Inspire and equip children and youth for environmental protection
  • Encourage research among students on river basin level issues
  • Provide inputs in Policy, Law and Act formulation to the Government
  • Assist governments in watershed management and NRM
  • Conduct education programs and camps for river basin communities
  • Internships for postgraduate and Doctoral students for project work
  • Act as Resource Persons in decentralised natural resources management, water resources management and agriculture — for LSGs and other NGOs
  • Consultancy services + Library reference facility for students and professionals in water management, dams and ecology
Vision

We view the river basin as the basic geographic, cultural, social and ecological unit for any development.

Most of the present problems related to water scarcity, inequity in sharing natural resources, conflicts over resource use and exploitation of natural resources are due to the lack of a holistic vision of participatory river basin level conservation, development and management.

Mission

Understand present river basin management, analyse problems, evolve corrective measures through research-based campaigns and advocacy, intervene at policy level, and help people take the right decisions for long-term sustenance of their river basins.

Pillars

Our Focus Areas

Advocacy

Promote policies and practices for sustainable river management.

Research

Studies on river health, hydrology and ecology.

Education

Workshops and outreach for communities and children.

Restoration

Restore rivers to improve water quality and biodiversity.

OUR PROGRAMS

What we do on the ground

Our work begins on the riverbank — with children, with communities, with data — and reaches into long-term governance and policy.

All Programs (6) Education & Youth Basin Governance Community Livelihoods Ecological Research & Restoration
Education • Children & Youth 01

Sensitizing the younger generation towards rivers. Kerala's 44 rivers are the lifeline of 30 million people, yet most west-flowing rivers have lost perennial flow.

  • •Films, field visits & Kuttikoottams at Athirappilly and Vazhachal
Reach & Scale Chalakudy Basin • 5–10 schools
Basin Management • Chalakudy 02

2. Integrated River Management

Reviving Chalakudy Puzha collaboratively. Reversing Kerala's transition from water-abundant to seasonal deficit through multi-stakeholder stewardship.

  • •2009: RRC + CPSS integrated river revival concept note
  • •Summer water management & advisory updates to LSGs

CAMPAIGN

When a river calls, people gather

Campaigns are how we take the river to the people — to colleges, riverbanks, towns and villages. Not just to talk about the river, but to walk with it, clean it, sing for it, and demand its right to flow.

FEATURED • JAN - MAR 2019

Ozhukanam Puzhakal
Rivers that should flow again

A two-month statewide campaign from January to March 2019, in memory of our founder Director Dr. Latha Anantha — to sensitize people on the need for our rivers to regain their flows.

What happened across Kerala

  • •River exhibitions, walks, riverside music nights, clean-ups, interactions, film screenings, painting / poster competitions at colleges and schools across the State — with local groups
  • •Inaugurated by Malayalam poet V. Madhusoodanan Nair at Pala Alphonsa College, followed by student parliament on river conservation + poster exhibition
  • •Concluded at Eloor — where struggles against pollution of Periyar River, the largest river in Kerala, continue even today
